Brushing Teeth Northview Family Dental WA 99218-1319After you are done brushing your teeth, it is important that you limit any water that you put in your mouth. Ideally, you do not want to put any water in your mouth for a full 30 minutes after you brush.

If you put water into your mouth right after brushing, you are taking away the fluoride that is coating your teeth. This could lead to extra cavities in your teeth.

Here is what you need to think about when it comes to taking care of your mouth after brushing.

Brushing Your Teeth Properly is Important

There are a lot of aspects of brushing your teeth that you need to make sure you are doing right. First, you need to brush for a full two minutes. This needs to cover all of the surfaces of your teeth, including the chewing surfaces, insides of your teeth, and the outsides of your teeth.

Once you are done brushing, you need to spit out the remaining toothpaste that is left in your mouth. Then, unless you are flossing, you need to leave your mouth alone.

During the next half-hour, your teeth are absorbing the fluoride left behind by the toothpaste. If you rinse right away with water, all you are doing is washing this valuable mineral off of your teeth. You want this on your teeth as it protects your teeth from getting more cavities.

If you are going to floss, then go ahead and floss. Just make sure you rinse well when you are done to get any extra debris out of your mouth. Finally, make sure you rinse with a fluoride-enriched mouthwash. This restores the fluoride that was washed out after flossing.
