Practicing Oral Care

The first step you need to take to set a good example for your family is to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day, every day. Let your children watch you brush your teeth. Have them brush their teeth with you. You can show them how you make sure you brush for two minutes by singing a song, for example. Your children need to see you brush the front and the back of your teeth so that all of your teeth are brushed for the same amount of time.


In addition to brushing, you need to make sure your children watch you floss as well. As with teeth brushing, have them practice with you. Show them how important it is to floss between each tooth. Caution them to be gentle so that they don’t hurt their gums.


Finally, make sure they are visiting their dentist twice a year. Let them come in to our office with you, and let them see what we do during a dental exam. If they see that you are not afraid of it, they won’t be either.
