Complications That Can Come from an Untreated Dental AbscessHaving a tooth abscess doesn't sound like a huge problem. People walk around with abscesses all of the time, right? How bad could it be?

As it turns out, having an abscess is not only bad for your dental health, it is bad for your overall health as well. In fact, having an abscess could be dangerous, especially if you don't get them looked at. Keep reading for more information about dental abscesses.

Tooth Abscesses

Tooth abscesses are actually pockets of infection that form from a bacterial infection in your mouth. The abscess is full of pus. There is no one spot where abscesses form, they could be along the gumline or within the tooth itself. Abscesses can be caused by several things, including cavities that have been untreated, as well as trauma to the mouth.

Usually, it is easy to figure out if you have an abscess or not. Your tooth may be really sensitive to heat or cold. You could get a severe toothache. You might also notice that your face is swollen, and your lymph nodes along your neck or under your jaw could be swollen as well. You might also notice a horrible taste in your mouth.

What If I Don't Treat It?
If you do have a tooth abscess, you will have to have the infection removed. A root canal may be needed as well, depending on how bad the abscess is. However, if you choose not to do anything, the complications are far worse than getting your tooth looked at. The infection in your tooth can spread all over your body. The infection can cause blood infections and brain abscesses. You could even get meningitis. Your heart could also be infected as well.
