Do your lips have a tendency to crack at the corners of your mouth? This condition can be referred to as angular cheilitis or perleche, and there are a variety of causes for this condition. Unfortunately, it can be extremely uncomfortable or even painful to deal with, so it is important to know how to prevent or treat this condition. Causes of Cracked Corners of the MouthThere are several different causes that can result in cracking of the corners of the mouth. In childhood, it often occurs when kids drool during their sleep, and it may also result when teens or young adults wear braces. However, older adults can also develop the issue, and anyone, regardless of age, can experience this condition as a result of dry, cold weather and other environmental factors.Treating the Issue If you are suffering from cracked corners of your mouth, it is important to treat the underlying infection, as yeast known as candida albicans can easily infect these sores. This infection can range from a minor discomfort in that specific area to an infection that can affect the entire mouth and even the throat. Your dentist can examine the area and can treat it with either topical or oral antifungal medications. Once you have treated the infection, you will need to help the cracked skin to heal. A steroid ointment can work to keep inflammation down, and an ointment with zinc oxide could provide a barrier to allow the tissues to heal. You will also need to look at the underlying cause of the problem, and if your mouth is cracking as a result of dentures, missing teeth, or other problems in your mouth, it is important that your dentist helps to create a restoration to prevent the problem in the future.
