a woman taking a quiz from Northview Family Dental
Teeth are something we don’t often think of until we have to! Pain, discomfort, or loss of teeth often send us to the dentist, but how much do you know about the following common teeth topics? Take this quick quiz to test your teeth smarts!

QUIZ:

1.

When should your child first see the dentist?

A. as soon as they drink from a bottle. B. 6 months after their first tooth comes in. C. after both top and bottom teeth come in. D. before their first day of preschool.
2.

At what age do kids stop getting new teeth?

A. after they start school. B. by 2nd grade (age 8) C. when they start middle school (age 13) D. when they start High School (age 15).
3.

D) 50% of kids.
4.

C. age 14. D. age 18.
5.

Which of these common youth activities can affect oral health?

A. playing a band instrument. b. a lip or tongue piercing. c. taking cough medicine. d. academic testing.

ANSWERS:

1.

B: 6 months after their first tooth comes in.

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) recommends taking your child to see the dentist 6 months after the first tooth erupts (breaks through the gums). Starting these visits early not only diagnosis & prevents tooth and gum decay/disease, but also sets the child up for a lifetime of good oral care.
2.

C: When they start middle school.

Most kids will get their “second molars” and final teeth sometime between ages 11 & 13. The famed "Wisdom teeth” however, are a separate case altogether. It is important to have your child’s wisdom teeth assessed by a dentist to determine if a course of action is needed.
3.

C: 25% of kids.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as many as 1 in 4 children (or 25%) are diagnosed with a cavity before the age of 4.
4.

A & B. This is a bit of a trick question.

Because teeth whitening kits are available over the counter and without prescription, technically, whitening can be administered at the discretion of the parent at any age. However, the AGD recommends that children be at least 14 years old so that tooth pulp is fully formed and that the whitening treatment be administered by a dental professional to monitor the effects on existing dental work and reactions such as extreme sensitivity.
5.

A, B, C & D (all of the above!)

There are many things that kids do everyday that can have an effect on their oral health. Using mouths to blow in wind instruments, (sharing bacteria), residual teeth chipping or infection from a mouth piercing, dry mouth (and resulting dental maladies), repercussions of cough and other medicines, and stress from testing (teeth grinding) can ALL affect oral health in children.

SO how did you do?! We hope you learned something new and have a few new topics to discuss with your child’s dentist!
