What does a dental hygienist do?

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Robert Leale
What does a dental hygienist do?Dental hygienists play a crucial role in your dental care. Our hygienists assist dentists by performing various duties such as performing dental cleanings, conducting x-rays, reviewing your medical and dental history, and giving you tips on how to maintain good oral hygiene.

Dental cleanings

Performing dental cleanings is the most popular role of dental hygienists. In the cleaning process, the hygienist will remove tartar from your teeth and stains and remove plaque, reducing the risk of tooth decay and cavities while maintaining your bright and attractive smile.

Medical and dental history

Before any dental procedure is performed, our hygienists will review your medical history. This review will allow them to be aware of any medication you may be on that may alter your dental treatment, allergies, or underlying medical conditions that may increase your risk of dental problems such as gingivitis.

The dentist will also examine your dental history to shed light on any dental procedures you may have undergone in the past. The information obtained from your medical and dental review will assist in choosing the perfect dental plan for you that will not interfere with your medication.

X-rays

Our dental hygienists will perform dental x-rays as a preventative measure. X-rays allow the hygienist to spot early signs of dental problems such as cavities and prevent them from developing into serious problems. Dental x-rays also detect early signs of gum disease and oral infections.

The hygienists' frequency of conducting the x-rays depends on whether you will exhibit signs of dental problems, your age, dental history, and underlying health conditions that put you more at risk of developing oral infections.

Contact our experts to book an appointment with our dental hygienists for dental cleaning services, preventative x-rays, and personalized dental plans based on your medical history. Call us now for quality services.
