Many people confine the idea of oral health to simply how often they see a dentist, brushing their teeth daily, and flossing as often as they can. However, there are some foods that we can eat that can really boost the health of our gums. If the base of our teeth is doing well, you can expect your teeth to do well too.
Clean Crunching and Medicinal Munching
First up on the list of foods that can promote gum health is yogurt. Yogurt is a solid choice to start with because it works well with not only your teeth, but your gums, too. The calcium in yogurt helps to strengthen your teeth, while the bacteria in yogurt help promote and strengthen the bacteria in your own body.
Two other common ones on the list are water and fresh fruits and veggies. Water helps flush away any food particles or other detritus stuck in the mouth. This combats plaque build-up, keeping teeth healthy and happy. Fresh fruits and veggies contain a good amount of the vitamins and minerals that we need for our body, including our teeth and gums.
A third choice would be tea. Now, while tea can stain your teeth if you don't brush often enough, it also contains polyphenols. Polyphenols reduce inflammation of the gums in mouths that might already be hurting, and the slow the growth of the bacteria that leads to plaque and cavities. Overall, they provide help all around. If you want to know what other foods you could introduce to help your gums, or if you want to know if a certain food might be making any gum inflammation or pain worse, please contact our office. We will be happy to explain what should and should not be in your diet.
