5 Types of Dental Floss

5 Types of Dental FlossDentists recommend brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing them at least once a day to maintain good oral hygiene. Flossing reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Traditional floss essentially consists of a cord made of thin filaments that can remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth. There are various types of dental floss to choose from.

Standard Floss

Standard floss consists of thin nylon fabrics twisted together. This helps you use the floss between the right areas of your teeth. One of the disadvantages of standard floss is that it can break and shred. However, it is compact and easy to store.

Dental Tape

A dental tape is flatter and broader than the standard floss. It is available in both waxed and unwaxed varieties. This type of floss is especially useful for people with larger gaps between their teeth.

Super Floss

A super floss resembles standard floss, except for a fluffy part in the center. This floss is suitable for people whose teeth are more spaced out or who wear dental appliances like braces or bridges. A super floss has stiff ends to facilitate threading between teeth or under bridges.

Waxed Floss

Waxed floss is preferred for its durability. The nylon strings that make up this floss are dipped in the wax that protects them against breakage. However, it may be difficult to fit waxed floss amid teeth that are tightly spaced.

Unwaxed Floss

An unwaxed floss consists of several small nylon strings twisted together to form a single string. As it is not coated with wax, it is easy to fix nylon floss between your teeth. The cons of unwaxed floss is that it is prone to fraying, and may be difficult to use for people with limited motor skills.
