What's good for our body is also good for our oral health. And what better time to talk about it then National Nutrition Month.
Here are a few simple tips to consider choosing from for an overall healthier you....
Limit acidic foods... Or don't eat them on their own. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, and lemons should be eaten as part of a larger meal in order to minimize the acid they contain.
Eat more cheese... Eating cheese raises the pH in your mouth and lows the risk of tooth decay. It's thought that the chewing required to eat cheese increases saliva in the mouth. Cheese also contains calcium and protein, nutrients that strengthen tooth enamel.
Avoid sugary beverages Sports drinks, soda, and juice are not good for teeth or your body.
Chew gum... Sugar-free gum made helps stimulate the flow of saliva – the best protector of teeth we possess.
Eat more Almonds... Almonds are great for your teeth because they are a good source of calcium and protein while being low in sugar.
Limit snacking... Continual snacking provides an environment for bacteria to thrive and attack your tooth’s enamel.
Eat firm, crunchy fruits and veggies... These tend to be high in water, which dilutes the effects of the sugars they contain. They also help gently brush your teeth, and stimulate the flow of saliva to wash away bacteria.
Then there's the obvious... Drink plenty of water and eat from all five food groups.
There are a lot of other great ways to improve both your oral and overall health, these are only a few!
