Some people are addicted to chewing ice like people who are addicted to smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. They will do weird things to get their fix, even scraping ice off of the freezer walls to get that cold, and crunchy craving they need so badly.

Some people have even bought a sno-cone machine to get their fix. Although this seems like a harmless habit, other than the fact that crunching on ice can be annoying to other people, it is harmful to your teeth and shows a sign of a different health problem. Keep reading to find out more information.

Why Chewing on Ice is Bad For You

It is a fact that excessively chewing on ice can ruin your teeth and can also harm your gums. The term for eating or chewing on things that have no value to your body is called Pica and chewing ice is one of these items that have no value to you or your body. The most common term for chewing on ice, when it comes to pica, is pagophagia.

However, it does not matter what the term is, as much as it matters as why the act of chewing ice a lot, even on a daily basis, is not good for you in the first place. Although it will not mess up your overall health as many other addictions will, it will hurt your teeth by cracking and chipping them, making your gums and jaw sore, ruining fillings or crowns, and can damage tooth enamel.

Quitting the Annoying Habit

The first thing you need to do to quit regularly chewing on ice is to get a physical done on your health to see if you have another condition such as anemia or another health condition. Many people who have anemia say that they stop craving the chewing of ice as soon as their medical condition is treated properly.
