There are many types of mouthwash out there to choose from, but you may be wondering if you need to use it. If you are maintaining proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing every day, do you need to add mouthwash into the mix?

What Does Mouthwash Do for You?

There are many reasons why someone might want to use mouthwash. Some mouth rinses offer more cosmetic benefits - managing bad breath or tooth whitening - while others are used for therapeutic purposes.

Mouthwash can help remove plaque loosened by brushing or plaque that is stuck in places your toothbrush cannot easily reach. It can also manage future buildup of plaque, which can help prevent tartar and tooth decay in the future. Mouthwashes also are useful for preventing or managing existing gum disease.

Should You Be Using Mouthwash?

There are many factors that go into determining what dental care a person needs, and mouthwash is no different. Depending on your current dental health, you may or may not need mouthwash. If you do not have gum disease or tooth decay, you may not need a mouth rinse.

However, using mouthwash can improve your oral hygiene routine if you are unable to floss and brush thoroughly or need help managing gum disease or enamel decay.

If you decide to use a mouthwash, remember that it is not a substitute for brushing or flossing. If you are not sure if mouthwash is the right supplement for your oral hygiene routine, contact our office, and we can advise you on what tools can help improve your oral health.
