Is It Normal For My Gums to Bleed When Brushing or Flossing?

Posted on 7/20/2016 by Robert Leale
A woman suffering from bleeding gums while flossing.Your gums should be pink, healthy and comfortable. Along with that description, your gums should not be bleeding. Even when brushing or flossing. It is common for patients to assume that gums naturally bleed when brushing or flossing, in fact almost half of our patients have experienced it, adding to the idea that it is normal. It's not. We want to help you have strong healthy gums that are free of infection and can support your teeth.

Why are my gums bleeding?

Bleeding gums is a sign indicating infection. There are many dental terms for this condition, gingivitis, gum disease, periodontal disease, periodontitis, all of which sums up a bacterial infection of your soft gum tissues that support your teeth. Gum disease is a common, though dangerous dental condition that can affect your teeth.

Bacteria has found its way between your teeth and has extended down into your gums. This is generally due to plaque that has rested along the rim of your teeth and then hardened into tartar or calculus.

Tartar is filled with damage causing bacteria that will infect your gums, turning them red due to irritation, can cause bleeding and eventually cause your gums to recede from your teeth, decreasing the stability of your teeth.

What can I do to stop my gums from bleeding?

The first thing a patient can do is schedule a dental cleaning with our hygienist. In some cases, it may be recommended that a deep cleaning including scaling and root planing may be necessary.

We will then discuss flossing techniques and brushing habits. Working together, we can restore your gums to health, strengthen them to provide firm support for your teeth, and increase the health of your mouth.

Please contact us if you have any questions about bleeding gums.
