It's Possible to Fix Your Cracked Porcelain Veneers

Posted on 5/10/2016 by Robert Leale
A man covering his mouth, because he just cracked his dental veneer! You've just invested in a beautiful, new smile with porcelain veneers, and suddenly, you notice a chip in one of your teeth.

What do you do? Is it possible to even fix it? Fortunately, a trip back to your dentist can restore your smile back to like-new condition.

Why Did Your Veneer Crack or Break?

There are a variety of reasons that a dental veneer could crack or suffer some other type of damage:

•  Trauma. If you suffer a blow to the face, your veneers could crack or break.
•  Bad habits. Do you have a habit of chewing on pens, ice, or your fingernails? You could be putting excess pressure on your teeth that might result in a break.
•  Bite problems. If you suffer from an improper bite that is placing excessive pressure on certain teeth, your veneers may not be able to withstand these forces and could be damaged.
•  Grinding. Do you grind your teeth when you are nervous or when you are asleep at night? This added pressure on the teeth could cause breaks and other destruction.

What Your Dentist Can Do

Your dentist can evaluate your situation to determine the best course of action to fix your veneers. This will likely involve removing the old veneer to place a new one, but if the damage has extended to the underlying natural tooth, you may need additional treatment.

It is important to remember that you need to care for your veneers just like you would your natural teeth. Veneers aren't indestructible, so you should be careful to avoid eating extremely hard foods, and never use your teeth as tools to open packages.

However, if you do suffer from a break or other damage, know that we can help, please contact us to set up an appointment today!
