Get a Smoother Smile with Enamel Shaping

Posted on 2/25/2016 by Robert Leale
A woman suffering from chipped teeth!A small chip in your tooth can make a big impact on the appearance of your smile, especially when the damage is done to one of the front teeth.

If the problem is relatively minor, you might not want to spend the time and money to have a major corrective procedure done. Instead, consider enamel shaping in order to fix the problem and give you back your beautiful, smooth smile.

When Should You Consider Enamel Shaping?

First, before you consider shaping the enamel, it is important to identify just what the enamel is. The enamel is the tough, outer covering of your teeth, and it works to protect the softer inner structures. Shaping of the enamel can be used when your tooth is only in need of a fine adjustment, such as when the shape of one tooth doesn't really match its counterpart, or if the surface seems to be a little on the rough side.

What Happens during Enamel Shaping?

Enamel shaping, which might also be referred to as recontouring, is a relatively simple procedure. Your dentist will perform it by using the polishing tools that you might be familiar with from your routine cleanings. The goal will be to remove only a small amount of the surface in order to change up the look of your tooth. This is usually done without sedation or numbing your mouth.

Some people confuse enamel shaping with dental bonding, but these two procedures are actually opposites. With enamel shaping, part of the enamel will be removed, and with bonding, additional materials will be added in order to fill in gaps or holes. Either procedure can help to correct the appearance of your tooth depending on the circumstances.

If you aren't happy with the appearance of your smile and want to discuss enamel shaping and other options, contact our office to set up a consultation.
