Tooth Tattoos Are a New Trend in Self Expression

Posted on 12/23/2015 by Robert Leale
A woman scared of getting a tooth tattoo. Some people are always looking for new ways to express themselves, and tattoos have been used since ancient times as a means to do so. Now, some people are taking this trend to a whole new level by tattooing their teeth.

What Exactly Are Tooth Tattoos?

Tooth tattoos are artwork that has been applied to the teeth, and they fall into two main categories: permanent and temporary. If you are going to jump on the tooth tattooing bandwagon, temporary options are arguably the better choice. A temporary dental tattoo will consist of a template that is glued onto the teeth. In the past, a dentist could apply them in about 15 minutes, but now you can buy the decals online and put them in place on your own. The end result is instant dental art that will last for about 24 hours.

Permanent tooth tattoos aren't stuck to or glued on a tooth. They're drilled on, and the process can take many hours for detailed designs. In addition to being time-consuming, dental tattoos are expensive, and if you decide that you aren't happy with your artwork, it can't be brushed away or removed like a temporary option. In other cases, a tattoo could be applied to a crown before the restoration is cemented onto your teeth.

Are Tooth Tattoos Dangerous?

Unfortunately, there hasn't been a lot of research done regarding the exact dangers of dental tattoos, especially the permanent options. Any time that you are altering the enamel of your teeth you could be setting yourself up for a problem, and while dental tattoos aren't painful, they could cause irreversible damage.

If you are interested in a dental tattoo, it is a good idea to talk to your dentist ahead of time. Call us to talk about how these procedures could impact your oral health.
