How to Care for Porcelain Veneers

Posted on 6/25/2015 by Robert Leale

A woman showing off her new porcelain veneers she got from Northview Family Dental. Veneers are great for those who wish to save their existing teeth and create a brand new smile, but they can also be a larger investment. Therefore, you do not want them becoming chipped or stained beyond repair. Taking good care of your veneers can lead to them lasting longer. They are a major investment in your smile. When you take good care of veneers they can last anywhere from ten to fifteen years or even longer.

Oral Hygiene with Porcelain Veneers

There are several things that will stay the same between real teeth and porcelain veneers care, such as brushing regularly twice a day. It is also recommended that you floss and rinse your mouth out regularly after meals. Your veneers require a different type of toothpaste and toothbrush, one that is not too hard on them and one that you can rest assured is effective for keeping them white.

Because you still have to worry about the parts of your natural teeth that are not protected by the veneers, keeping good care of your veneers includes visiting the dentist on a regular basis. Most dentists recommend making regular appointments at least once every six months, or twice a year. This will help you fight cavities and inflammation that you may have around your gum line. The dentist will be able to help solve any problems that come up with damage to your veneers. If the problems go untreated, they may need to be replaced.

Also keep the following in mind when caring for your porcelain veneers:

•  Sharp impacts are very dangerous for veneers. Therefore, it is better not to bite your nails, chew on bottles, or attempt to open containers with your veneers.

•  Use nonabrasive toothpaste. Toothpaste that is too tough on your veneers can damage them more than help. If you have problems finding the best toothpaste for your situation, ask your dentist on the next visit or call and ask them.

•  Sometimes more than one visit every six months is needed to make sure your veneers are stain free and still holding strong. Without this care, they could fracture and their lifespan could be shortened.

•  Get used to brushing and flossing more often, keeping them food free and clean is the best way to prevent damage.

•  Try not to snack as frequently as before, snacking could cause the uncovered tooth to decay.

•  If you play sports, protect them as if you would braces or all natural teeth, wear a mouth guard even in sports where contact is rare.

These are a few things to remember when taking care of your porcelain veneers, but what will we do to take care of them upon your visits? We will clean them and check each one for any fractures or cracks. Dr. Leale will also make sure that the veneer itself has not worn down on the tooth. If any signs of gum inflammation are present, we will be able to catch it before it potentially turns into gum disease. Just because you have veneers does not mean your risk for gum disease decreases.

Vibrating toothbrushes, also known as sonic toothbrushes, have been known to be the best choice of toothbrush for veneers. Stay away from the harder bristle brushes such as ultrasonic scalars. These can damage your veneers, shorten their lifespan, and create more problems for your teeth, gums.
