Aging and Your Smile

Posted on 2/24/2015 by Robert Leale

Older Couple So many things change as you age, including your smile. It is a natural part of the aging process, but there are simple ways that you can prevent it from becoming too obvious or unpleasant for you. A few factors play a role in how much your smile changes, including your genetics, dental hygiene and diet. How you care for your teeth and your health are both factors you can control, while genetics is obviously something you have to accept. In order to keep your smile from changing too drastically, use the following tips.

•  Keep your regular appointments It's easy to think that because everything seems okay in your mouth that you do not need to come in for an appointment. Routine cleanings, exams, and x-rays can tell what is going on in your mouth. If your teeth are slightly shifting, we can tell early on in an x-ray. If you have excessive tooth decay, we can rectify it in order to save your teeth. If your teeth are discolored, we can help you whiten them.
•  Brush and floss daily Even as you age, you need to keep brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once. This philosophy never stops. In fact, if you are taking medication or your diet has been altered due to a medical condition, it is even more important to thoroughly brush and floss in order to remove harmful bacteria from your mouth.
•  Eat a healthy diet Your meals and snacks should include the colors of the rainbow in order to keep your vitamins and nutrients at optimal levels. As your organs start slowing down with age, nutrients are needed in greater quantity. If you eat a diet heavy in sugar and carbohydrates, you are going to affect your oral health, putting you at risk for tooth loss and an ever-changing smile.

Taking care of your smile as you age will help you to keep a youthful appearance and avoid that sagging face look that is so common in the elderly that have suffered tooth loss.
