Flossing - To Use or Not to Use Waxed or Flavored Floss. That is the Question.

Black woman flossing her teethWhen it comes to oral care, most people know that brushing twice a day is essential. But what about flossing? Some people swear by it, while others find it tedious or unnecessary. And then there's the question of which type of floss to use: waxed or flavored?

The good news is that there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to flossing. Both waxed and flavored floss can be effective at removing plaque and food debris from between your teeth. Ultimately, the best type of floss for you is the one that you'll actually use regularly.

Waxed vs. Unwaxed Floss

Waxed floss has a coating of wax that makes it glide more easily between your teeth. This can be helpful if you have tight teeth or find it difficult to maneuver regular floss. However, some people find that waxed floss is more likely to shred or break.

Unwaxed floss is a bit more rough, but it may be more effective at removing plaque. It's also a bit less expensive than waxed floss.

Flavored vs. Unflavored Floss

Flavored floss can make flossing more pleasant, especially for children or people who find the taste of regular floss unpleasant. However, some flavored flosses contain artificial sweeteners or flavors that can irritate some people's mouths.

Unflavored floss is the simplest option, but some people find it bland or even slightly unpleasant.

So, which type of floss is right for you?

Here are some factors to consider:

•  Your personal preference: Do you find waxed or unwaxed floss more comfortable to use? Do you prefer flavored or unflavored floss?
•  Your teeth: Do you have tight teeth or gaps between your teeth?
•  Your budget: Waxed and flavored floss can be more expensive than unwaxed and unflavored floss.

Ultimately, the best way to decide which type of floss is right for you is to experiment with different options and see what works best for you.

No matter which type of floss you choose, be sure to use it correctly:

•  Break off a piece of floss about 18 inches long.
•  Wrap the ends of the floss around your middle fingers.
•  Hold the floss taut between your thumbs and index fingers.
•  Gently slide the floss between your teeth.
•  Curve the floss into a C-shape around each tooth.
•  Move the floss up and down along the sides of each tooth.
•  Repeat this process for all of your teeth.

Flossing is an important part of a healthy oral care routine. By removing plaque and food debris from between your teeth, flossing can help to prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems.

If you have any questions about flossing or other oral care practices, be sure to talk to your dentist. They can help you develop a personalized oral care routine that is right for you.
