Six Natural Remedies That Fight a Cold

Posted on 3/15/2025 by Northview Family Dental
Image of a woman sleeping in her bed. Feeling under the weather? You're not alone. Colds are one of the most common illnesses, affecting millions of people each year. While there's no cure for the common cold, there are many things you can do to manage your symptoms and feel better faster.

In addition to the usual rest and fluids, several natural remedies can help fight a cold. These remedies are often inexpensive, readily available, and have minimal side effects.

Here are six natural remedies that can help you overcome a cold:

1. Gargling with Salt Water

A simple saltwater gargle can help soothe a sore throat and reduce inflammation. Mix a teaspoon of salt with a glass of warm water, and gargle for 30 seconds, several times a day.

2. Drinking Warm Liquids

Warm liquids, like tea, broth, or even warm water with lemon, can help loosen mucus and clear congestion. They also help keep you hydrated, which is important when you're sick.

3. Inhaling Steam

Taking a hot shower or inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water can help loosen mucus and open up your airways. You can add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint to the water for added benefits.

4. Honey

Honey is a natural cough suppressant and can help soothe a sore throat. Add a spoonful of honey to warm water or tea for a soothing and comforting drink.

5. Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce nausea and vomiting, common symptoms of a cold. You can drink ginger tea, add grated ginger to your food, or even chew on a small piece of ginger.

6. Rest

Getting enough rest is essential for recovery. When you're sick, your body needs time to fight off the virus. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

These are just a few natural remedies that can help fight a cold. If your symptoms are severe or persist for more than a week, please see your doctor.

Remember, these remedies are not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult your doctor before starting any new treatment, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
