What Dry Mouth Does to Your Teeth and Gums

Woman smiling with glasses at Northview Family Dental in Spokane, WASaliva plays a vital role in keeping your mouth healthy. It washes away food particles, neutralizes acids, and helps prevent cavities and gum disease. But when you don't produce enough saliva, you can develop a condition called dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. This can lead to several problems for your oral health.

How Dry Mouth Affects Your Teeth

Dry mouth can increase your risk of cavities for several reasons. First, without enough saliva to wash away food particles, bacteria have more time to build up on your teeth and form plaque. This plaque can then harden into tartar, which is much more difficult to remove. Second, saliva helps neutralize the acids produced by bacteria in your mouth. Without enough saliva, these acids can erode your tooth enamel, making you more susceptible to cavities.

How Dry Mouth Affects Your Gums

Dry mouth can also lead to gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. This is an infection of the gums that can damage the soft tissues and bones that support your teeth. In severe cases, gum disease can even lead to tooth loss.

Without enough saliva, your gums are more likely to become inflamed and irritated. This can make them more susceptible to infection. Additionally, dry mouth can make it difficult to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, which can further contribute to gum disease.

What You Can Do About Dry Mouth

If you are experiencing dry mouth, there are several things you can do to help manage the condition and protect your oral health.

•  Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is essential for saliva production. Aim to drink eight glasses of water per day.
•  Use sugar-free gum or candy: Chewing can help stimulate saliva production. Choose sugar-free options to avoid contributing to cavities.
•  Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These substances can dehydrate you and worsen dry mouth symptoms.
•  Quit smoking: Smoking can damage your salivary glands and decrease saliva production.
•  See your dentist regularly: Your dentist can identify the underlying cause of your dry mouth and recommend treatment options.

Prevention Dentistry and Oral Care

Dry mouth is a common problem, but it is important to take steps to prevent it from causing serious damage to your teeth and gums. By following the tips above, you can help keep your mouth healthy and prevent the problems associated with dry mouth.

If you are concerned about dry mouth, talk to your dentist. They can help you develop a treatment plan that is right for you.

Remember, Prevention Dentistry is always the best approach to oral care. By taking care of your teeth and gums, you can avoid many problems down the road.
