What Causes Toothaches in Children?

Dentist and child learn how to brush teethNo one likes to see their child in pain. Toothache can make it challenging for the child to eat their favorite foods. It can also result in sleepless nights. For this reason, your main goal is to take the pain away. The best way to get rid of toothaches in children is by understanding the underlying causes. If you do not treat the root cause, the pain will return, and the issue can worsen and harm the oral health of your child. Here are 3 causes of tooth pain in children:

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is a common oral condition in kids. During its early stage, tooth decay might not hurt. However, if not treated, it can reach the nerves, causing severe tooth pain. At this stage, the pain may be throbbing and persistent so that your child cannot sleep. The best way to deal with tooth decay in children is by consulting with a pediatric dentist. This dental professional may recommend fillings, veneers, or crowns, depending on the age of your child. In severe cases, extraction may be the only way to prevent the infection from spreading.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding (bruxism) is a common habit in children. Some grind their teeth at night, while others do so during the day. Regardless of the time, bruxism can damage the tooth enamel. When the enamel wears away, it exposes the nerves, causing sharp tooth pain.

Gum Disease

Gum disease occurs due to various reasons. The leading cause of this oral issue is plaque buildup. It can also happen due to aggressive brushing. If not treated, gum disease (gingivitis) can progress and cause the gum tissues to recede. Gum recession exposes the roots of the teeth. When the roots are exposed, your child will experience severe pain when they consume something hot or cold.

Is your child experiencing a toothache? Toothaches are not something to be ignored. While it is not always a dental emergency, it can be a sign of severe oral conditions. Visit us, and our dental team will determine the cause of the toothache in your child.
