Why Is Vitamin C So Important For My Teeth And Gums?

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Weo Admin

One of the most important parts of the body for vitamin C is your gums. In fact, if you aren't getting enough vitamin C in your diet, one of the first places a vitamin C deficiency shows up is in your gums. Here are some reasons vitamin C is critical for your teeth and gums.

Sources of Vitamin C

Vitamin C can be found in many fruits and vegetables. All citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, lemons, and limes, contain vitamin C. Tomatoes also contain vitamin C, and leafy green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and bell peppers have quantities of the vitamin.

Not a big fruit and veggie person? Luckily, you can find vitamin C in multivitamins, as well as drops, gummies, and capsules.

What Happens if You Don't Get Enough Vitamin C

If you don't get enough vitamin C, one of the first places your body will begin to show damage from a lack of the vitamin are your teeth and gums. In the past, sailors and poor families were afflicted with a disease called scurvy. Scurvy causes weakness and exhaustion, excessive bruising, wounds that won't heal, and hair loss. However, the first place people really notice the symptoms of scurvy, which is caused by a lack of vitamin C, is bleeding gums, gums that recede, and loss of teeth.

That's because vitamin C makes your gums strong and healthy by ensuring good blood flow. When you have good blood flow to your gums, they appear pink and healthy. Because your gums act as the support system for your teeth, if your gums aren't healthy, your teeth will fall out.

Not sure if you are getting enough vitamin C? Check with a dentist on the health of your gums.
