What Are The Most Common Questions About Braces?

What Are The Most Common Questions About Braces? If you or a member of your family have been told it's time for braces, you may have a lot of questions about braces and how to care for them. Below we discuss the most common questions about braces you may have below.

How Do Braces Actually Work?

Braces usually consist of two parts. First, all of your teeth will have a bracket, which can be made out of ceramic, metal, or hard plastic. These brackets have holes in the time so that an orthodontist can thread a wire through each bracket. It is these wires that orthodontists tighten each time you visit to move your teeth around until they are in the correct position.

How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?

Each patient is different. How long you will have to wear braces depends on how severe your spacing or bite problem is. You can shorten the time you will have to wear braces if you stay away from foods that can cause you to break wires or brackets and if you practice good oral hygiene. The average length of time most patients are in braces is around two years.

How Do I Take Care of My Braces?

Braces aren't too difficult to care for as long as you follow a few simple steps. First, follow the directions your orthodontist gives you. There are foods you will need to stay away from when you have braces that could damage them, such as popcorn, hard foods such as apples, and sticky foods such as caramel or gum. If you continue to eat these foods during your treatment, you can break brackets or wires, which means a return trip to the orthodontist.

Second, you'll want to practice good oral hygiene while you have braces, which means brushing and flossing your braces after each meal or snack. Flossing is tricky with braces, which is why your orthodontist will give you flossers to help you clean your braces well.
