What Is The Difference Between Retainers And Braces

Posted on 1/9/2023 by Robert Leale
What Is The Difference Between Retainers And BracesThe difference between braces and retainers is that they are glued on the teeth and should remain throughout the entire treatment. Retainers, on the other hand, are made of wire and molded plastic designed for easy removal and not worn the entire time but for a specific time. Although retainers and braces are believed to be for kids only, they can also be worn by anyone, even adults. Thus, it would be best if you fixed misaligned or crooked teeth at any age.

Does Retainers Work Without Braces In Straightening Teeth?

The truth is that you cannot wear braces without first putting on braces. After the braces straighten your teeth, retainers are left to maintain the new look by putting teeth in their new locations. Braces can be used from 12 to 18 months, while retainers require a few hours every day for about two weeks, and the results are out. It is only during eating or sleeping at night that you cannot keep wearing the retainers.

Are Braces Better Than Retainers

Retainers are best when used for short-term or minor issues. The material used for their making is not as strong as that of braces. Thus, they are unable to realign many teeth or severely realigned teeth. Braces are strong enough because of their robust material made of ceramic and metal plates. These plates are well-fitted to the teeth by gently pulling or pushing them to their positions. Braces are perfect for solving conditions such as overlapping, crooked teeth or overcrowded teeth.

Conclusion

Braces and retainers are different, and both are not suitable when they are used separately used. If you are confused about which one you should go for, first communicate to your orthodontist and know how the two will go hand in hand or after the other.
