How to Manage a Broken Tooth

Posted on 5/10/2019 by Robert Leale
How to Manage a Broken ToothIf your tooth has broken or become chipped, there are a few things you can do to manage it until you can get in to see us. These breaks, chips, and cracks can be painful, so you want to make certain that you're doing everything you can to control the pain and not make it any worse. Here are some tips for managing your broken tooth.

Rinse Out Your Mouth

You want to make certain that nothing is getting down into the crack or working its way into the break in your tooth. After every meal or snack, rinse out your mouth to get rid of any food particles that may be stuck near the tooth. You can use any time of water, including saline, or you can make a mouthwash out of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water.

Control Any Swelling or Bleeding

In some cases, especially if the broken tooth was caused by trauma to the head or face, you may experience some swelling or bleeding. You can hold ice to the exterior of your face to help reduce the swelling. For bleeding, carefully hold a piece of gauze within your mouth near the broken tooth. Be sure to replace it regularly if it is soaking up a lot of blood.

Take Care with What You Eat and Drink
Certain foods and drink can damage your tooth now that it has a weak spot. Don't drink soda, alcohol, anything acidic, or coffee until you get in to see us. You may also want to avoid really cold or really hot drinks.

As far as foods go, avoid anything chewy that could put extra pressure on your broken tooth. Also avoid foods that may get stuck in your teeth easily and foods full of sugar.

Give us a call as soon as you realize your tooth is broken or chipped. It's important you get in to see us as soon as possible so we can determine the extent of the damage and how to fix it.
